Hope
9” H x 21” D
Paper string, spent winter milkweed pods, hand-spun milkweed string.
Simple ingredients, neutral colour palette, structured yet organic- just like the natural world, especially in Canadian winter.
This piece was made in the liminal time between Xmas and New Year’s,
as a return to see what’s possible after a time in hospital. It sat finished - but yet incomplete - until recently. I awoke in the night and knew that it needed the softness of the milkweed silk in a single cord of strength, that tied it all together.
By reaching out to community and the land with intentions of reciprocity and an understanding that all flourishing is mutual, I learned: how to use a drop spindle, collect milkweed fibres, spread the seeds back to the land from which it came and make 14ft of two ply milkweed yarn.
And now it feels done.
In these times and world of uncertainty, I call this piece ‘Hope’ and intentionally return my gaze to the natural world that arises each day with love, reciprocity and resilience.
May it bring you the hope you need as well.
